Traditional Yang Family Tai Chi Pattern

The Center teaches Traditional Yang Family Style Taiji under the guidance of Sifu Lily Qin, a student of Grandmaster Lin Mogen (Chengdu, China).

The Traditional Yang Family Style Taiji pattern is one of the most popular Taijiquan patterns in the world. It was created more than 200 years ago by Yang Lu-Shan. There are 36 key postures in the Traditional Yang Family Pattern; all the movements are slow, gentle, stable, relaxed, and the big-frame circular motions make this pattern extremely flowing. Because this is a longer pattern, it is taught in 6 sections.

The class is open both to beginners and continuing students.  Due to the length of the pattern (108 postures), it takes multiple blocks to learn the entire form.  The Fall blocks are open to beginning students as well as those who are still learning or wish to refine the pattern.  The Winter/Spring blocks are geared for continuing students and are open to beginners only by permission of instructor.

The class emphasizes the traditional Yang Style Tai Chi theories, principles, and rules. All the teaching follows the original Yang Style Tai Chi oral and recorded instructions and introduces Master Lin Mo-Gen’s Tai Chi principles and concepts.

Master Lin Mo-Gen, now in his mid-90s, is a Yang Style Tai Chi authority.  He is one of the few remaining forefront fifth-generation figures in Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan in China. He is the fifth generation exponent of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan and the fifth disciple of Grandmaster Li Ya-Xuan who was the fourth generation exponent of the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. Our master, Lily Qin, is one of Master Lin Mo-Gen’s disciples and has received his authorization to teach this style.
